BBC:
South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon has been formally elected the next United Nations secretary general, in a vote in the General Assembly.
The election follows
Mr Ban’s nomination to succeed Kofi Annan by the UN Security Council on Monday.
Mr Annan is due to step down on 31 December after heading the UN for two five-year terms.
Mr Ban, 62, will be the first Asian to head the UN since Burma’s U Thant, who held the post from 1961 to 1971.

There was not very much information about the other candidates: in All About Latvia we can read something about the Latvian candidate, Vaira Vike-Freiberga.

I’m not going to celebrate until I follow-up on this vote however my initial reaction is definitely positive.
South Korea is a strong ally of the west and undoubtedly our new UN will be more pro-active with events in Asia (i.e. commie countries like China and NK better be more careful).
Well, the problem, as I wrote some days ago, is that Mr. Ban Ki-Moon was the architect and main supporter of a policy of don’t oppose NKorea on Human Rights, mainly when all the worst things of the Kim’s regime were happening. So I’m not sure really…
SKorea is turning also very anti-American -there are a lot of photos in the Web-.
But I understand what you say. Let’s hope that’s true.. 😉
